Current Status of OpenSim Git Master

Ai Austin-2
There seems to be a problem with the OpenSim Git Master we site
downloads. When we click on the main OpenSim GitHub entries at
      <http://opensimulator.org/viewgit/?a=shortlog&p=opensim>http://opensimulator.org/viewgit/?a=shortlog&p=opensim
for the tar or zip icon it now gives an odd file name to save. For
example for the latest Git master.... thiese file names...

opensim-0.6.9.rc1-16010-g0fbb4f0.tar
opensim-0.6.9.rc1-16010-g0fbb4f0.zip

Something has got messed up.  Looking back through the recent
commits, lots have the "0.6.9.rc1-ddddd-" bit added in, but not all.
There are some commits that went into the original master that have
the normal naming.

There also now seem to be 72 warnings, versus the 4 we had remaining
before the merge... I guess a lot relate to the tests which I can see
UbitUmarov working through to try to remove.

Can you also clarify what the purpose of "ubOde phyiscs engine and
ubODEMeshmerizer are? Are these transitional modules to replace the
ODE and Meshmerizer ones and support var regions with ODE physics
engine when fully tested?  Or are they meant as long term
alternatives to the default BulletSim physics engine?

Re: Current Status of OpenSim Git Master

Hi,

Github is NOT the opensim master. The opensim master is on
opensimulator.org. We are not responsible for github or what it does.

Your link is to viewgit, which is indeed ours but even so, it's a
3rd party program and we can't say if and why it misbehaves.

Avination, which is the origin of the new code, has never bothered
to remove warnings so our warnings are now in master. Maybe we'll do
another Warning Safari.

Regarding physics, BulletSim does not fill all users' needs. Some
still need an ODE implementation. ODE has many issues and
incompatibilities. ubODE fixes a lot of them, and allows vehicles
with parameters tuned for Buletsim/SL to work with an ODE
implementation. It also has numerous other advantages.

Thanks Melanie... and you are correct, I meant the web page displayed
by "ViewGit" where a ZIP of the current dev master sources is accessible at
http://opensimulator.org/viewgit/?a=shortlog&p=opensim

...  as listed in the "Source Code via ViewGit Web Utility" section on
http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Source_Code_Repository

Something has got messed up there with the "0.6.9.rc1-ddddd-" part
added to the download .zip and .tar file names for some recent commits.

@Michael Emory Cerquoni:
the zip file found in that Url is labelled "opensimulator-master.zip" insufficient to archive the different commits (we need a unique reference for dev and users to have understandable mantis); I also have not found a trace of shortlog  which is absolutely necessary to track down regression.

@Melany
I agree the right place is: http://opensimulator.org/viewgit/?a=shortlog&p=opensim
but we need to have both tar/zip correctly referenced to match the commit;
0.6.9.rc1 I don't know what it is but 0.8.3 I understand that
and if it is possible date/time and the short commit ID to correctly sort the archived masters.
Now I use opensim_20151117_0900_geab427e but I would prefer to use a label recognized by all.
I may be a twisted mind but I fear that one day we end up not understanding :)

For an example of misunderstanding, look at http://opensimulator.org/mantis/view.php?id=7741 where UbitUmarov doesn't understandopensim-0.6.9.rc1-16006-geab427e and ask "what is really the opensim version you are using? "

The .zip and .tar files have recently been just of format "opensim-"
followed by the first 7 characters of the commit ID. E.g....

opensim-c4d225e.zip

Like you Garmin, when I download the sources from the above ViewGtit
location to do a new build I usually add the commit yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm
to that locally to help in version control.  I used also to add the
previously displayed linear sequence r/ddddd number which used to be
handy but was removed a month or two ago as it was causing dev problems.

The problem just now though seems to be that the Viewgit web page zi
and ./tar download links is adding the extra very "0.6.9.rc1-ddddd-"
part in the download  file name. E.g. the source zip link of the
latest version today on
http://opensimulator.org/viewgit/?a=shortlog&p=opensim is named..

opensim-0.6.9.rc1-16011-g6dafce9.zip

Re: Current Status of OpenSim Git Master

Shy Robbiani
I never understood the zip file naming on viewgit and therefore prefere to pull the sources directly with git from the repository at <a href="git://opensimulator.org/git/opensim" rel="nofollow">git://opensimulator.org/git/opensim.

I name my zips as follows:
opensim-<version>-dev-<xxxxxxx>.zip
opensim-<version>-dev-<xxxxxxx>-source.zip

<version> is the 4 digit version number, <xxxxxxx> are the first 7 hex-characters from the commit ID.
Linux versions will be .tar.gz instead of .zip.

Example:
opensim-0.8.3.0-dev-36f7e96.zip or opensim-0.8.3.0-dev-36f7e96-source.zip if I archive the sources.

This provides enough information and contains the same information I get with the show version console command.

However, it is not always easy to figure out what the correct version is. The current git tag is 0.9.0. There was a 0.8.3.0-dev before 0.8.2.0-rc1 was officially out etc. To me, sometimes confusing :)

If it's part of the opensimulator project infrastructure, the
opensimulator project has a responsibility to make sure it
functions correctly. If the project can't do that, the tool
must be removed imho.

Scary, but ok. I'd be happy to help fix warnings, but i'm a bit
hesistant - would it make sense for me to start working on this? I
don't want to start on something only to be told what i'm doing
is never going to be used.

Also, what would be the correct procedure? Create an item in mantis
for the warning and then put the patch there?

I don't like software that compiles with warnings (it's often a
sign that corners have been cut).

Re: Current Status of OpenSim Git Master

Hi Tom,

a warning safari is highly appreciated. You don't need to create a
Mantis for each warning, simply create one for the warnings and
attach the patches to it. For pure warning removal with no
functional changes, the patches can be larger than what we usually
ask for with functional changes.

ViewGit for OpenSim is now working again...   Did Ubit change that?

The file format has changed from opensim-<commit-short-code>.zip to
opensim-0.9.0-<sequence-number>-<commit-short-code>.zip

I am not sure why 0.9.0... has the dev master version changed from
0.8.3.0 to 0.9.0?

Me too... folks did work to get the warnings down to just 4... it
would be nice to see them squished with the new code additions. 72 is a lot.

I fixed the viewgit numbering. Yes, the next release will be 0.9.0 due to the amount of functionality added.

Is there a summary of the new functionality from the avnmerge somewhere?

Thanks Melanie.

Actually I now see that the ViewGit tar or zip downloads naming has
an additional "g" on the front of the first 7 characters of the
commit code. Is that intended and what is it for?

And should there be an additional .0 in the version as we have a 4
part version number now?

The file name format has changed to
opensim-0.9.0-<sequence-number>-g<commit-short-code>.zip

I just double checked to make sure I did not leave any typos in viewgit, i was playing around when this was first reported, It is not because of viewgit that the aditional "g" is there as far as I can tell. It is probably truncating something though perhaps.

That is the output of git describe --tags --long, the g is what
you would expect..

I think the actual problem is that someone forgot to put -dev after 0.9.0 and the length has changed.  Melanie could you add that normally we keep master as -dev.

- The opensim-0.6.9.. was a git side issue, now fixed. (actually already
points to future 0.9..)
- ubOde physics engine is a new alternative engine also based on
OpenDynamicsEngine library like Ode, being a evolution of it.
It is the default Avination engine. Since it had independent development and
was just added, it still needs its own mesh handler ubODEMeshmerizer, for
now incompatible with Meshmerizer. ubODEMeshmerizer and Meshmerizer will
eventually be merged.
 - Bullet, Ode and ubOde support var regions.

Original ODE is maintained only as a compatible engine, for regions that
only have scripts that need it to work.
It will be removed sometime in future.
New contents should use Bullet or ubOde. (i.e. more compatible with SL) and
old should be updated as possible.
ubOde and Bullet should be made be full compatible but some differences are
still expected now.

Compile warnings cleanup is not a priority at the moment (as long they are
just warnings).

Regards,
Ubit

Subject: [Opensim-dev] Current Status of OpenSim Git Master

There seems to be a problem with the OpenSim Git Master we site downloads.
When we click on the main OpenSim GitHub entries at

.org/viewgit/?a=shortlog&p=opensim
for the tar or zip icon it now gives an odd file name to save. For example
for the latest Git master.... thiese file names...

opensim-0.6.9.rc1-16010-g0fbb4f0.tar
opensim-0.6.9.rc1-16010-g0fbb4f0.zip

Something has got messed up.  Looking back through the recent commits, lots
have the "0.6.9.rc1-ddddd-" bit added in, but not all.
There are some commits that went into the original master that have the
normal naming.

There also now seem to be 72 warnings, versus the 4 we had remaining before
the merge... I guess a lot relate to the tests which I can see UbitUmarov
working through to try to remove.

Can you also clarify what the purpose of "ubOde phyiscs engine and
ubODEMeshmerizer are? Are these transitional modules to replace the ODE and
Meshmerizer ones and support var regions with ODE physics engine when fully
tested?  Or are they meant as long term alternatives to the default
BulletSim physics engine?

Re: Current Status of OpenSim Git Master

DZ-2

I have had issues  with NPC movement (severe  rubber banding)  on bullet, so ODE  is  still  the primary physics  engines  I use   to run  performance tests.
